Fun Facts About Cider
Made from crushed, fermented apples, cider – unlike beer – doesn’t require heat in its production. Cider has a lengthy history that dates to around 55 B.C., when Romans marched into Kent, England, and discovered locals fermenting the juice of apples into an alcoholic beverage.
Traditional cider apples are notably different from the apples we commonly eat. These apples are sour and bitter, high in tannins, making them unpleasant to eat but perfect for creating a complex and flavourful drink. The experimentation with cider doesn’t stop there. Producers continually push the boundaries by incorporating other fruits, oak aging, and even hops to create unique and exciting flavours.
The History of Growers Cider
The story of Growers Cider begins in 1922 in Saanichton, British Columbia. Five innovative fruit packers sought to expand their horizons and tap into new markets for their berries. They started by creating berry wines from loganberries and blackberries, which quickly gained popularity. By 1936, their repertoire had grown to include brandy and wine, and it wasn’t until 1962 that they ventured into cider production. This pivotal move marked the beginning of their dominance in the Canadian cider market, establishing Growers as a household name.
