How to Cool Down Your Wine in a Flash

Bottles of Open, Sandbanks and Saintly chilled with ice.

In the world of wine, there’s always something new to learn and enjoy. And today is no exception!

Picture this: You’ve picked up your favourite local wine from your neighbourhood Wine Rack and you can’t wait to open it. The only problem is, its room temperature, and we all know that a beautiful bottle of rosé should be enjoyed chilled. But don’t sweat it! We’ve got some fantastic wine hacks to get your local Ontario wine to its ideal temperature.

The Ultimate Wine Cooling Hacks

Whether you’ve purchased a crisp white wine, a fruity rosé, or an elegant sparkling wine, here are 4 easy tips on how to cool down your wine quickly:

  1. Frozen Grapes: Firstly, they’re a delicious snack and secondly, frozen grapes make for a great ice cube alternative as they won’t dilute or alter the taste of your wine like ice cubes will. Here’s a pro tip that’s purely aesthetic-based: Use red grapes for red wine and green grapes for white wine.
  2. Icy Water Bath: Place your wine bottle horizontally into a bucket or large container. Add ice and completely submerge the bottle under water. Here’s a pro tip to take it one step further: Salt! Adding at least a few cups of salt will bring down the freezing temperature of the water, so your wine will chill faster. Be sure to dissolve the salt in room-temperature water prior to adding the ice. In just 15 minutes, your wine will be ready for sipping.
  3. Freezer Method: Sounds simple, right? That’s because it is! Place your bottle of wine into the freezer. Avoid putting a towel around it as this will insulate the bottle and does the opposite of what you want. Here’s a pro tip to help speed up the process and avoid any freezing: Set a timer for 40 minutes and store it horizontally. Having more surfaces of the bottle touching the freezer is key for a simple yet effective hack.
  4. Chill Your Glasses: Instead of chilling the bottle, pour your wine into glasses and place them in the fridge. Given that a wine glass is thinner than a bottle of wine, your wine will cool down in about 30 minutes versus the average 90 minutes it would take the bottle in the fridge. For a pro tip: Put your glasses of wine towards the back of the fridge and cover them with plastic. This will help seal in all the aromas and reduce potential oxidation.
